thompson peak |

by the time we
returned, the guy we had seen before had broken camp and was gone, so we quickly grabbed
that spot for one of the tents. a few minutes later, tom managed to find another
small clearing about 20 yards away. both of us had a wonderful view of the salmon
river valley (where we started),...
...as well as of the entire cirque (a horseshoe shaped formation of mountains) made up of thompson and williams peaks that hooked around no-name lake....
with the cirque to our west, the sun dipped below it about 6pm, so the evening chill hit fast. after a hearty meal and some conversation (topic: "why the hell can't we do this ALL the time???), i stuffed my weary body into my sleeping bag and retired, while tom, proving more resilient, sat out to witness the coming of the stars and moon. i woke several times during the night to the quiet rumblings and echoes of rock falls punctuating the utter silence. i also managed to unzip my tent for a couple half-hour peeks at the stars crowding the sky. |
